An important message from Debbie Peacock, child protection manager for schools, on updates to safeguarding guidance.
Domestic Abuse Notifications
You would have received through Perspective Lite changes to how domestic abuse notifications are to be received by schools. To support this the protocols have been updated on the Domestic Abuse Notifications page of SchoolsNet.
Derbyshire domestic abuse services are finalising an updated domestic abuse guidance document and as soon as this is ready we will upload this. In the interim please continue to use the 2018 guidance. There are no changes to your practice, but please use the new flow chart and protocol and archive your old ones. This change is because the police want to take control and send you the notification directly.
Prevent, Derbyshire Police and Schools
The Extremism and Prevent (counter terrorism) KCSIE tile on SchoolsNet has been updated by Derbyshire Community Safety. You no longer need to complete a risk indicator checklist as the Police Prevent team want all concerns and therefore this means making a referral directly, if you have Prevent concerns, to the Police Prevent team. They would then be a point of contact for the school. They have provided an updated work flow chart to assist. There have been no changes to national policy or responses and it is still required that all DSLs in a school complete the WRAP training on offer (one off training) and that all staff complete the online learning module.
Online Safety Model Policy
We have had to update this policy to reflect the changes from the safeguarding board to the new partnership and KCSIE 2019. Key changes have been made to pages 5, 23 and 29.
There are no other changes to this policy and we have used the opportunity to update the Online Safety page on SchoolsNet.
New to Role (the role of Designated Safeguarding Lead)
A task and finish task group of the Safeguarding Education Sub-Committee has updated the New to the Role tile on SchoolsNet to assist any new DSL in the role. This is an excellent way to induct and/or refresh roles and responsibilities and also assist a DSL to become familiar with local processes, resources, policies and templates on offer. This includes a calendar of prompts.
Period product scheme for schools and colleges in England
The scheme will support young people to go about their daily lives without getting caught out if they have come on their period unexpectedly, forgotten to bring products with them or if they cannot afford the products they need. Schools can choose from a range of period products, including environmentally friendly and reusable products, and have these delivered free of charge. Schools are encouraged to engage learners, parents and carers in decisions around how these products are made available on-site. Further details for this scheme are available from GOV.UK.
