For the safety of people on and around the railway, education is key, especially for young people.

Electricity and the railway

Forty per cent of the network is electrified; this will grow by 25% by 2020, and as new routes are electrified we need to educate young people about the increased danger.

Level crossings

With over 6,100 level crossings around Britain, it is important that young people understand how to use them safely.

Network Rail has developed educational resources in consultation with teachers and pupils about electrification on the railway, level crossings and railway safety.

Issues covered include the dangers of electricity around the railway, the history of the railway and how the railway will be electrified. Activities include a quiz, a writing exercise and exploring what’s involved in decision making. Accompanying student worksheets are also available.
