Road Safety

Derbyshire County Council Road Safety Team provides support for all schools in Derbyshire to develop learning opportunities about road safety and for pupils to learn vital road safety skills. Further information on this support can be found on the Services for Schools website.

THINK! campaign is run by the Department for Transport and has a wealth of resources for schools including age appropriate lesson plans and videos.

Cycling guidance

The Department of Transport campaign Bikeability provides resources for schools plus information about different levels of cycle routes.

Let's Ride – British Cycling are hosting a number of free local cycling events. Their website has guidance available if you are looking for great cycle routes across the UK – all of which are accredited by British Cycling.

Derelict buildings safety

The Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service is highlighting the danger of children playing in Derelict Buildings, and to raise awareness for this has released a video. The film aims to underline the dangers of entering derelict and disused buildings, raising awareness to young children who may see the buildings as a place to explore, and not a place of danger.

Railway line safety

For the safety of people on and around the railway, education is key, especially for young people. 

Forty per cent of the network is electrified; this will grow by 25% by 2020, and as new routes are electrified we need to educate young people about the increased danger. With over 6,100 level crossings around Britain, it is important that young people understand how to use them safely.

Network Rail has developed educational resources in consultation with teachers and pupils about electrification on the railway, level crossings and railway safety.

Water safety

(The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Leisure Safety department is focused on reducing the several hundred drowning deaths that occur every year in the UK. It provides balanced advice, campaign for change to drive improvements where appropriate, working with a wide range of professionals, the UK Government and most importantly members of the public.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) - water safety has produced the short film Shock to underline the dangers of ‘Cold Water Shock’, which occurs in the body when entering cold water.

Derbyshire has a number of quarries and reservoirs that are an attraction to children and young people. The Nidirect government services website has useful information and advice in this area.

RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institute) offers free teaching packs for teachers and youth leaders include everything you need to teach children about water safety and lifesaving at sea.
