Drug and alcohol issues guidance.
Most young people will not use drugs, but all young people need drug and alcohol education. Derbyshire County Council offers support to secondary schools through the Coriell Drug and Alcohol Education Award. The Coriell Award is underpinned in the whole School Approach and is supported by all Derbyshire partners including Derby and Derbyshire Safeguarding Children Partnership, Derbyshire Constabulary and CGL. The schools signing up to this scheme will receive ongoing support to review, deliver and develop their school drug and alcohol education programme. For further details please contact Alison Hill:

For some young people, drug or alcohol misuse will contribute to a range of poor outcomes, for example:
- health
- mental health
- educational attainment
- family breakdown
- economic wellbeing
- offending behaviour
Derbyshire County Council commissions a specialist substance misuse service for children and young people called Derbyshire CGL who work with young people up to the age of 19 who:
- are using or have recently stopped using substances
- feel like they have a problem and
- want to do something about it
This includes support to stop, cut down or explore their use with the aim of keeping them as safe as possible (harm reduction). Interventions are centred around the wishes and feelings of the young person in question, therefore prior to making a referral it is important that the young person’s voluntary consent is sought. Referrals can be made over the phone or online.
The Adult Service provider is the Derbyshire Recovery Partnership which is a partnership between Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, local charity Derbyshire Alcohol Advice Service (DAAS), national charity Phoenix Futures and peer-led organisation Intuitive Thinking Skills. The partnership offers a wide range of services to help adults reduce the harm from their substance use, access treatment and move into recovery. It also offers advice and help for families and carers who are living with, or supporting, someone with a substance misuse issue.
Action for Children Space 4 U - is aimed at children and young people affected by substance misuse of others.
The service aims to deliver sessions to support children and young people (between 5 and 18 years old) who are affected by the substance misuse of other significant people around them.
